Appiah Dankwah, often known as Appietus, is a multi-award-winning sound engineer and music producer from Ghana. Recently, he expressed grave worry over the growing number of self-taught sound engineers in Ghana.
He thinks that the nation's music community is in danger from these people, who say they learnt via internet tutorials. He stressed the value of professional training for anybody hoping to have a significant impact on Ghana's music industry.
The renowned engineer and music producer, who has created over 200 hit songs, discussed the negative effects of amateur sound engineers on Ghanaian sound production quality in an interview with Graphic Showbiz on Tuesday, July 16, 2024.
He exhorted these self-taught people to pursue excellence and advance their abilities in order to raise the nation's music production standards.
"You must comprehend sound engineering, including the dynamics, the range of decibels you may reach, the frequency range that listeners can perceive, and all the technical details. All these things are important for you to know. People that say things like "Oh, I learned sound engineering on YouTube" only happen in our industry.

"You cannot go to YouTube and learn how to become a surgeon or medical doctor. No one will lie down and declare, "Okay, this is my stomach; operate on me," just because they saw it posted on a social media site. However, there are those in Ghana who claim, "Oh, I learned it on YouTube, so I know." Please, come on. You cannot learn the actual stuff from these online networks," he said.
"Works from these amateurs are a contributing factor to why most of our songs are not breaking the global market," Appietus said in his next statement. The global market is aware of quality, hence inferior products will not be accepted. Industry standard sound is something you should have because, come on, they'll just throw your music away if you don't.
